If you can’t tell, I’m an avid gamer. I tend to play games for hours, usually liking the comfort of a good chair, or back in the day a good bed or sofa to lie down on to the game for a fair few hours. I think all of those comforts have caused some considerable issues to me now.
I have a curve in my spine. I don’t blame it on my posture at all, I know somewhat of it is genetic but nonetheless, it is there and causes a lot of discomforts if I sit there for a long period of time. I usually just stand up, this tends to give me an excuse to go get some food or a drink, lets the pain subside for a bit before I jump back in the game.
At this moment in time PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a huge game and I play for a good few hours. Recently I have been streaming it with streamer GFBruce, if you would like to check out his channel, it can be found here. But as you know, like any other streamer, you’re there, dedicated for hours and you’re going to get back it for some people. I certainly do, this tends to end the stream and start a fresh one which can be annoying to viewers also. Even if you’re not streaming and just a gamer you may get a backache quite a bit. There are a few options out there but the one I am going to throw at you is a cheaper alternative option than some.
I have recently been looking at a new desk that would help me out with backache. Upon researching how to help, a lot of scientific studies show that standing helps out massively and can also be good for your health. You can get electric ones that you press a button and it rises. This is exceptionally good as the desk rises for you and there you are standing and you don’t have to move away from your desk till backache subsides. Prices for these? You’re looking at £800/$1200. Pretty expensive investment. You can get manual ones but these require a lot of effort which could also give you more back pain. It’s a lot of money if you are wanting to get rid of that back pain. But at this point, I came across Varidesk.
Varidesk is a company that focuses on people that users computers a lot but sustain a lot of pain. This is from office workers to gamers. I know that a lot of big YouTubers out there stand while recording, these come in the forms of PewDiePie who currently is the biggest YouTuber in the world. JackSepticEye tends to stand in some of his videos another large YouTuber. So you’re not the only one.
Varidesk were happy to gift one of their setups. I managed to get my hands on a white Varidesk Pro Plus 36 Inch. It’s made out of solid wood and it’s definitely a contemporary design which looks smart on any desk. They come in different sizes for any desk setup. With mine, I use a 3 monitor setup and required a rather large size layout but they do come in even larger sizes if required and you can get a smaller size if you only use a single monitor for the laptop. I cannot fault it, not one bit. It is rather heavy but this makes it sturdy, you can feel the value in the build. There aren’t any wobbly bits where it’s ready to shake off. You pull 2 leavers and you’re upstanding.
I set up my 3 monitor setup. I purchase a triple monitor bracket which I secured that to the back of the desk and the Varidesk had no fault at all carrying this weight. I set up a stream and away we go. For a good hour, I was good. I have a gamers chair with lumbar support so that definitely helps but I began to feel a bit of pain in my lower back. I lifted the Varidesk up and as easy as that, I was standing and streaming at the same time. You can feel it subside pretty much immediately. It definitely felt weird at first but you can feel that it is rather comfortable to stand and game at the same time. I know that many people can’t stand for ages and this isn’t going to take over sitting down for most of the time but it definitely helps those intervals surpass before sitting down again. Press the same 2 leavers and you’re right back down. And again, as easy as that.
Not only does this subsides a lot of my back pain, it may help people out there that may not get any pain at all but likes to look after themselves a bit. Here are some facts for you that may surprise you as much as it surprised me.
- 46% increase in productivity
- Burns 50 calories per hour
- Lowers blood pressure
- Lowers cholesterol
- Lowers body pain from sitting down
There are many more healthy facts with that. I have been using it for about 3 weeks now and I use it at least once a day. Writing articles, playing videos games, it’s helped me massively and I will continue to use it. I wanted to give it some time to settle in to see if it was worth it, do understand standing up as well as sitting down while gaming. I think 3 weeks is ample time to get a good feel of it, and I do not regret researching it. Not one bit. I don’t feel stupid doing something like this. It made me feel good. I feel healthier, I can do stuff for a longer period of time, and if you feel like you’re getting a bit back pain but don’t want to admit to it, or you feel like it’s a bit stupid. I did. Standing up while gaming, then I began to realize I used to do it when I was younger and used to stand up in my parent’s house while on a console when I used to sit on the floor for a long period of time, I would stand with my controller. I didn’t feel stupid or different then, why should I feel any different now? Give it some time, it WILL help. You’re not the only one out there.
The model I got is £365. A huge decrease over the more expensive options of electrical desks that can take up quite the space where you can purchase this and place it on your existing desk that you haven’t had any problems with. There is other options Varidesk offer also and they all start from £150. So if you’re experiencing a bit of back pain or just want to get that little bit more healthy, check out Varidesk here.
