One thing that original Xbox owners either loved or hated was the Xbox Duke Controller. Some people stated it was the beginning of the creation of the current Xbox One controller other says that the Duke was horrible and forced Xbox to change their ways. Either way, right now it’s an icon of video game history, and now we’re getting a modern version of it.
The Duke was released way back in 2001. Just think, that was 17 years ago. 17 years. Does that make you feel old yet? The controller was designed by Seamus Blackley. Now, because of a simple tweet he had made as a joke, this brought back the original controller.
The controller isn’t a direct match to the original. The new Duke controller has a circular OLED screen that shows the original boot up of the original Xbox. That, is pretty sick.

You also have to remember that this controller is for the Xbox One so there have been changes since the Duke’s release, an additional two shoulder buttons notably the biggest change. The original had 2 buttons next to the ABXY buttons, white and black. They kept those and added 2 extra buttons to try and keep to the original as possible.
I still own my original Duke controller, I didn’t mind it. It was bulky and hurt my hands only if I played a good few hours of gameplay but never really had any problems with it. Albeit ugly. I think this one is going in my glass cabinet with my other special edition Xbox One controllers rather than use it, but that’s just me! If you want that original feel of the controller being held by a 9-foot cable, go for it!
Expect a review up when it has been released as we will be getting our grubby hands on one of these. What could we call it? New retro review? Considering it is the same controller we had 17 years ago!
Hyperkin Duke is available to pre-order now and will be released on May 8th.
